How To

Cabinet Painting Kit Instructions

NOTES BEFORE YOU BEGIN

  1. If you’d like to have before and after photos of your kitchen, we recommend you take four photos from four different angles. Then, after the process is finished, you can take four more photos from those same angles and enjoy the transformation!
  2. If it’s humid, it will take the paint longer to dry. A box fan will aid in speeding up the drying time.
  3. If you find the coating is too thick for your liking, you can dilute the coating with water. See the dilution guidelines on the last page and select the coating color and the amount of water required to dilute the coating. Slowly add the desired amount of water while stirring gently as you add the water. Do not dump the water in. Ensure that you continue to stir the mixture until the coating is uniform.
  4. Shaking paint can create air bubbles. Instead, be sure to always mix paint by stirring it gently.
  5. Priming is only necessary if painting bare, unfinished wood. Otherwise, skip that section.
  6. If applying primer, it is important that the primer is dry before starting to paint.

MARK CABINETS, AND REMOVE DOORS

  1. Use a Sharpie to mark doors from top left to top right, and from bottom left to bottom right. On the top doors, mark on the bottom hinge, so you know where the knob goes. On the bottom doors, mark on the top hinge so you know where the knob goes. After you have marked the doors, place a sticker on the inside of the frame with the corresponding number, so you can easily identify which door goes where when replacing them.
  2. Use a Sharpie to mark drawers from left to right and draw an arrow pointing towards the top so you know the direction of the drawer front (use for the drawers that the front comes off of). Then place a sticker inside the frame with the corresponding number, so you can easily identify which drawer goes where when replacing them.
  3. False front drawers are either stapled or nailed in, have turn clasps, or pop out with U shaped fasteners.
  4. Place a thick cloth on countertops or floor, where you can place the cabinet doors after you take them off, to protect both the countertops/floors and the doors.
  5. Remove all knobs and handles from the doors and drawers.
  6. Remove the first door, lay it down carefully on the padded countertop or floor, and remove hinges right away. Repeat this process for each door/drawer until all have been removed. Place each piece back-to-back.

PREPARATION

  1. First, cover countertops and floors with drop cloths. We find it helpful to establish a set up area for the paint and tools, etc., so you can stay organized.
  2. Pull stove out a few inches, that way if paint gets on the stove, you can push the stove back in and hide the paint. Using furniture sliders, pull the refrigerator out all the way to paint behind it.
  3. Tape the edges around the microwave and oven hood and place a drop cloth over both to protect them. Tape any other areas where you will be cutting in.
  4. Using a plastic paint pail/bucket, add an 80/20 mixture of water and cabinet/grease cleaner. Immerse the 60-grit sandpaper sponge into the mixture. From top left to top right, sand frames, dipping the sponge back into the mixture as necessary. Repeat on bottom frames. Additional scrubbing will be needed on grease spots and high traffic areas. Repeat this process for the doors and drawers.
  5. Wipe off all dirt and soap residue with a wet rag and clean water. Make sure you wipe all surfaces clean and remove dust from corners, etc. Also, wipe the floors and any areas where you will be cutting in a tight line, like microwaves, floors, countertops, etc. All surfaces must be clean of dust, chalk, oil, grease, wax, polish, mold/mildew stains, loose/peeling paint, rust and all other foreign substances.

PRIME THE FRAMES

Please Note: Priming is only necessary if you are painting bare wood. Grainy oak cabinets may require a coat of primer if Tanon stain comes through. We recommend using SW Pro Block primer (Can also use other quality primers). You’ll want to make sure the grain is filled, and the little pin holes are sealed. Beginning on the top left, start to cut in all areas. Once the top is finished, repeat on the bottom starting at the left. Be sure to cut in around the walls, the frames, and the crown molding. When cutting in, use narrow lines to avoid brush marks. Do not leave globs of paint on the frame.

  1. Using a bucket with a liner filled with primer, and a paint roller, start at the top left and roll both frames and sides. Repeat this process on the lower cabinets.
  2. Let dry completely before moving on to painting.

PAINT THE FRAMES

  1. First, before painting, apply putty to all holes and dings. Caulk all cracks and gaps. Let dry.
  2. Beginning on the top left, start to cut in all areas. Once the top is finished, repeat on the bottom, left to right. Be sure to cut in around the walls, frames, and crown molding. When cutting in, use narrow lines to avoid brush marks. Do not leave globs of paint on the frames.
  3. Using a bucket with a liner filled with the paint and a paint roller, start at the top left, and roll both the frames and sides. Repeat this process on the lower cabinets. Get as close as possible to the cut in lines so you don’t see the difference between brush marks and roller marks.
  4. Once the paint is dry, inspect the frames with a flashlight. See if there is any debris in the paint, or if you can see through this coat. If so, it may be beneficial to apply another coat.
  5. If another coat of paint is necessary, sand the frames with the 80-grit sandpaper sponge. Wipe all dust off the frames to ensure they are clean. Then, repeat steps 3-5 steps again.
  6. If your cabinet frames are finished, you can clean up. Remove the tape, by scoring it with a knife and then peeling it off. Look for and clean up any drips on cabinets, countertops, and floors. Sweep and mop your floors.

NOTE: For the following sections “Priming the Doors/Drawers” and “Painting the Doors/Drawers”, you can also set up a station to spray them or call us 866-548-1625 and we can do it for you.

PRIME THE DOORS/DRAWERS

Please Note: Priming is only necessary if you are painting bare wood. Grainy oak cabinets may require a coat of primer if Tanon stain comes through. You’ll want to make sure the grain is filled, and the little pin holes are sealed.

  1. Set up a station where you can prime/paint the doors, where dust won’t blow on them, and where they can sit to dry.
  2. We recommend using SW Pro Block primer (Can also use other quality primers). Cut in all areas where you can’t use a roller. Do this for all doors/drawers, on the fronts. Do not leave globs of paint on the pieces.
  3. Using a bucket with a liner filled with primer and a paint roller, start rolling the rest of the doors/drawers on the front.
  4. Once the door/drawers have completely dried on the front, repeat steps 2-3 for the back sides.
  5. Let dry completely before moving on to painting.
  6. PAINT THE DOORS/DRAWERS
  7. First, before painting, apply putty to all holes and dings. Caulk all cracks and gaps. Let dry.
  8. Working door by door, cut in all areas where you can’t use a roller. Do this for all doors/drawers, on the fronts. Do not leave globs of paint on the pieces.
  9. Using a bucket with a liner filled with the paint and a paint roller, start rolling the unpainted areas on the front of the doors/drawers. Try to get as close as possible to the cut in lines so you don’t see the difference between brush marks and roller marks.
  10. Once the paint is dry, inspect the pieces with a flashlight. See if there is any debris in the paint, or if you can see beneath this coat of paint. If so, you need to apply another coat.
  11. If another coat of paint is necessary, sand the doors/drawers with the 80-grit sandpaper sponge. Wipe all dust off the doors/drawers, ensuring they are clean. Then, repeat steps 3-6 steps again. If another coat of paint is not necessary, skip step 6 and move on to step 7.
  12. Once the front of the doors/drawers are dry, you can begin to paint the back of the doors/drawers. Repeat steps 3-6 for the back of the doors/drawers.
  13. Finally, allow the backs to dry. Once dry, your cabinet doors are finished, and you can clean up.

PUTTING YOUR KITCHEN BACK TOGETHER

  1. Put hinges back onto the doors. Reinstall doors onto the cabinets. Put hinges and knobs back onto the doors. Install bumpers onto the doors.
  2. Reinstall drawers/drawer fronts. Put knobs back onto the drawers. Install bumpers onto drawers.
